Websites Like Plurk are Not For Me

I’m not really into the whole micro-blogging thing, having never signed up for an account at Twitter and Plurk. Why?
- Lack of control. What if Plurk suddenly closed down? Say, after 5 years of loyal members sharing tidbits and interesting info? Maintaining a personal blog allows me to have full control over what I share with the world, and that includes keeping it online. All my efforts publishing don’t run the risk of ultimately being for nothing.
- I already have too much to do. I know it’s fun keeping tabs on the online grapevine, and sharing interesting stuff with others. And it’s probably a huge ego-boost when people comment on the semi-trivialities of your life. But I already do too many things; the last thing I need is another commitment that I will no doubt spent time—and money—maintaining.
- The karma game. Whoever decided to put “karma” into Plurk is a genius, since it pushes people to interact within the website. But I don’t want to make another virtual stat an important part of my life! I already fret over my blogs’ traffic statistics, working full-time to push them up as much as possible. The prospect of extending such attention to my personal online profile is scary at best.
- More offline interaction is needed. I need to work on my socialization skills, mainly because I’ve spent the last two years of my life in front of the computer screen. I don’t think participating in the online “conversation” is the best way to start becoming the life of the party.
- My life isn’t interesting enough. Honestly, would anything I post on Plurk attract any significant attention? Probably not, since I’m too geeky to appeal to a lot of people anyway. My tendency to be ruthless about self-promotion probably doesn’t help either.
Oh well, let’s see what happens. I’m signing up for a Plurk account after writing this.

Hey Rico, I think after signing into Plurk, you’ll find out that most of the blog traffic will come from Plurkers also.
Hehehe

How does something so wrong feels so right?
